Introducing the BillyChip Foundation
The BillyChip Foundation was established in 2018 to honor the memory of Billy Abernethy-Hope. Billy, a dedicated ambulance driver from Bristol, possessed a big heart and a multitude of creative ideas for improving the lives of the homeless, impoverished, and rough sleepers. Tragically, Billy’s life was cut short in a motorcycle accident at the young age of 20, but his father, Jon, is steadfast in making Billy’s vision a reality through the BillyChip Foundation.
But what exactly does the foundation do? Billy was determined to address the common belief that “if I give money to homeless people, they will only use it for drugs or alcohol.” To circumvent this issue, Billy conceived the idea of the BillyChip. Participating outlets offer these chips for £2, which can then be given to the homeless. These chips can be exchanged at affiliated establishments for food and/or beverages, ensuring that the aid reaches those who need it most.
PokerStars Joins the Cause
The BillyChip Foundation’s heartwarming mission has caught the attention of PokerStars, who are now joining forces to support this noble cause. Over a span of two years, PokerStars is contributing £100,000 to the charity.
In addition to this generous donation, a live charity poker tournament is set to take place during the PokerStars UK & Ireland Poker Tour at the prestigious Hippodrome Casino in London. This Texas No Limit Hold’em tournament, scheduled for September 20th, comes with a £220 buy-in, with £50 of each entry fee being donated to the BillyChip Foundation. It’s a unique opportunity to play poker while making a positive impact on society—truly a win-win!
PokerStars, now owned by Flutter, has consistently evolved alongside society, and they have even established an international Corporate Social Responsibility department. Sue Hammett, the Head of CSR, expressed the organization’s excitement about this partnership with BillyChip:

The 2023 PokerStars UK & Ireland Poker Tour consists of five stops in the UK (Blackpool, Brighton, London, Edinburgh, and Nottingham), the Summer Festival in Malta, and the Irish Open. As previously mentioned, the highlight is the BillyChip Charity Tournament at the Hippodrome Casino in London. These locations promise thrilling poker action, and the Irish Poker Open, in particular, stands out as the longest-running Texas NLH tournament in Europe.
